pronunciation: (hool'dra), -n. Scandinavian Mythology
Maren and her good friend and fellow musician Kari Tauring discovered in the winter of 2002 that they had common heritage— parts of each of their families were from the same area of the Sonja Fjord in Norway. After having worked together on many musical endeavors, including a Winter Solstice ritual show in 2003, they began delving deeper into their common Scandinavian ancestry in April of 2005. Through their search they discovered a long buried tradition of Women’s music from the Scandinavian heritages, using staves to drum out earthy rhythms and whose music was woven quietly, almost secretly, into the more accepted folk music passed down through the generations. Digging up songs from the past and merging the sounds and themes with their own original music, Huldre was born.
Experiencing Huldre in performance is to go viking; the haunting call of Huldrelokk and “Rida Ramka” lures you from Norway’s hills and Sweden’s hearth sides to the shores of Ireland with an original folk rock groove, “The One Who Loves Me.” The journey continues to England in the middle ages with “I Sing of a Maiden”, then transform with the mystical German Walpurgis madrigal. Wander the Italian pasturelands, then follow Huldre on their voyage to the new world with the French Voyageurs and greet the native people in their own tongue with a Lakota children’s song. |
